I was amused by your analysis of how Douglas Wilder won in
Virginia to become the first elected black Governor in the U.S.
(NATION, Nov. 20). I got the impression that the 58% of whites
who voted for the white candidate were mostly bigots while the 90%
of blacks who voted for Wilder were not. If the people of Virginia
selected their new Governor because they thought he was the best
man, then that is a fine thing. But if they voted for him merely
because he is black, then his election is hardly indicative of what
you call a "world bright with change."
