  4.     I was amused by your analysis of how Douglas Wilder won in
  5. Virginia to become the first elected black Governor in the U.S.
  6. (NATION, Nov. 20). I got the impression that the 58% of whites
  7. who voted for the white candidate were mostly bigots while the 90%
  8. of blacks who voted for Wilder were not. If the people of Virginia
  9. selected their new Governor because they thought he was the best
  10. man, then that is a fine thing. But if they voted for him merely
  11. because he is black, then his election is hardly indicative of what
  12. you call a "world bright with change."
